Dana McVicker's Crib
Step aside Joanna Gaines, interior design major, Dana McVicker has made her home in Waco, Texas. With a passion for home decor and art, Dana, made her first dorm room look like every freshman’s dream. And the best part -- most of her decorations are handmade or things she bought for cheap!
Tell me a little about yourself.
I am from Dallas, Texas. Baylor University was my first choice for college. My older sister goes here, which makes Baylor feel like home to me. Some fun facts about myself are that I am a double major in interior design and marketing. Art is a passion of mine, and it’s how I love to express myself.
Where did you find inspiration for your dorm?
I honestly find inspiration in Chip and JoJo. Pinterest, TJ Maxx, and HomeGoods are some of my other sources of inspiration. I have way too many pins on Pinterest (ha!).
What is the favorite part of your room?
Well, I made most of my wall decorations, so I would say those are my favorite. I love DIY projects!
What all is DIY in your room?
Both of the headboards I made. I found the base of my headboard outside of Collins Hall when my sister was moving out. I have been storing it in my closet, waiting for my own college experience to use it. My friends helped me replicate the headboard for my roommate's bed. I made the wall decorations over the summer. They were time-consuming but so much fun to make. I found the idea and tutorial on Pinterest.
What stores would you say you shopped the most at for your room?
I shopped mostly at TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Target. Target is my second home!
How long did it take you to prepare for your room?
It seems as if I brainstormed my room forever. I only started shopping 2 weeks before move-in day. I took basically everything from my room at home, which did not leave me with much else to purchase. I really love interior design, so designing my room here was easy.
Would you say you spent a lot of money on your dorm, or was it pretty inexpensive?
My mom loves to save money, and I do too. I tried my best to save as much money as I could while shopping. I took advantage of Hobby Lobby’s 40% coupon, and at home I work at HomeGoods so I used my discount there as well.
What are three words you would use to describe your home style?
Simple, Airy, and Comfy. I really wanted my dorm to feel like a home.
What advice would you offer to anyone decorating a new space?
Keep it simple, since less is more. This is even more true in a dorm. The more simple your design is, the cleaner it will feel.
