More than a black sweater

We all have those staples in our closet. The white shirt. The jean jacket. The little black dress. (Or red?) A timeless flannel. And the perfect sweater. The kind of pieces you forgot you wore on Friday, so you wear again on Monday because they’re just that great. But our wardrobe staple pieces are simply that, staples. Needless to say, they need a little help. Three of our Buttoned Babes are here to spice up your black sweater and flannel game, not only with a PSL. (Sorry I had to go there)

Black Sweater

Carissa pairs a shaggy jacket overtop her black sweater. Oh, how we adore a shaggy jacket. Keep it funky fresh with one and they are sure to draw attention. When picking this outfit, Carissa imagined herself going on a “walk during a beautiful Fall day in New York.”

Greta wears her black sweater with a jean jacket, plaid mini skirt, black tights, and Doc Marten boots. A pair of sheer patterned tights would make this schoolgirl turn rebel. Man Repeller rates Uniqlo’s sheer black tights as some of the best.

Greta said she takes outfit inspo from her favorite TV show character, “I chose a plaid skirt to go with the black top because I am always inspired by Rachel Green’s style.”

Cameron’s black-on-black says sophisticated yet youthful. She keeps the outfit casual with high-waisted black skinny jeans and an oversized jean jacket. Or try a more slim fitting jean jacket for a cleaner look. Who says you can’t wear jean-on-jean? Jewelry pops best with a monochrome outfit, so Cameron’s gold layered necklaces won’t go unnoticed. Pro tip: As we approach the winter months, black makes you look tanner and is ultra thinning.

Now, all you need is a closet and that one-of-a-kind black sweater. It’s a need, not a want.

Fall Flannel

What does Carissa do with a flannel? Tie one around your waist while wearing a jacket overtop. Get cold later? Put the flannel on under your jacket to beat the weather. Layers are a girl’s best friend.

Greta makes her flannel stand out with form fitting black undergarments while leaving her oversized flannel unbuttoned over top.

For her second look, Greta adds, “I think flannels can always add to a comfortable outfit with leggings.”

Button up your flannel and loosely tuck in to a neutral belt to hide the fact you may have only gotten ready in 10 minutes that morning.

Thrift a flannel for it to be already broken in, but for a classier, more sharp look head to J.Crew or Nordstrom for the solution.
