HSD Event: Apparel Design Perspective

Name: Alexis Walters

Classification: Senior

What made you choose Baylor? When I came to tour I immediately felt at home. I know that sounds super cliché but it’s true. The professor that gave me the tour of the design building was so cool and personable and I loved how close-knit the design program was. Because it’s so small you really get to know your professors and make lasting connections with them!

What inspired you to create your collection? I came up with my collection by fabric shopping! I went to New York and did some fabric shopping and found this super fun pink and orange polka dot fabric. All of my ideas stemmed from there. I knew I wanted to do something super girly because I am a total girly girl. So the color combo in the fabric I found was perfect!

Does your collection have a name? How were you able to come up with a theme? The name of my collection is “The Frill of it All” it’s a play on the saying “the thrill of it all” but because it’s so girly and frilly with ruffles and giant bows and tons of pink I thought that name was fitting!! My theme really just stemmed from that fabric I found, plus my girly personality!

How has being a part of the Apparel program influenced you? The apparel program has been such a big part of my life I truly feel blessed that I met all of the outstanding design professors and students. These people push me to be my best every day and encourage me to do more creatively than I ever could on my own. I feel so blessed to have their friendships and help. Without all of my professors’ guidance, there is NO way I’d have the job I have or any of the internships I’ve had. I’m so so grateful for this program.

Who is your favorite designer? Ulla Johnson! I love all of the ruffles and frills each of her pieces has. If you don’t know who this is look her up! She’s so cool.

How many hours do you spend a week working on your collection? Gosh, this one’s hard. A lot! Probably at least 7 hours a week! It’s a big time commitment but worth it in the end!

What are your post-graduation plans? Postgrad I have accepted a job with Abercrombie & Fitch Co. as a technical designer in Columbus, Ohio! I’m super excited.

Do you have any advice for future apparel students? Stick with it! It’s so easy to get burnt out or give up because the apparel program can be so difficult but by the time you graduate, it’s SO rewarding. You will be so happy you stuck with it. Also always update your portfolio it’s so much easier now than later!!! And pays attention in Ms. Fader’s class. You have no idea how beneficial her classes have been to me. And use your network! Baylor has so many amazing alums that your professors would love to get got in contact with. They’ll be so willing to help you with jobs and mentor you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them!
