Our Staff's Rainy Day Essentials
We’re in late March and headed into April soon, which brings about much rain here in TX! Our Buttoned staff curated a guide with all of our rainy day essentials. Keep reading to find out the books, movies, food, and other favorites our team uses to stay snug and cozy indoors as the gloomy weather persists.
Karis Cooper
Rainy Day Movie: I love the movie The Light between Oceans. The main characters live on a cozy lighthouse island, and the whole vibe is just perfect for a moody day indoors with a cup of tea.
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): The movie adapted from a book, and I highly recommend it as well. It goes by the same title and is written by M.L. Stedman. I also love a good mystery when it's rainy outside, so I recommend The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.
Anything else? Grab a super comfortable blanket, some lemon ginger tea, and write a letter to your future self. Seal it and write the later date you want to open it up on.
Mallory McKeever
Rainy Day Movie: From the characters and wardrobe to the dialogue, soundtrack, and scenery, Pride & Prejudice (2005) is the most beautiful and elegant film. The romance and depth of the story is overwhelmingly delightful for a stormy day.
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): The old CGI, the most lovable characters, and the classic storyline of King Arthur makes Merlin the perfect show to binge. It’s nostalgic, whimsical, funny, dreamy, and romantic– all the things you need in a comfort show.
Anything else? Do you want cozy? Make a warm bowl of pasta and play John Denver albums as you journal with old magazines clippings and a few paint pens.
Sarah Daniel
Rainy Day Movie: The Sound of Music is nostalgic, dreamy, and simply all the joy you’ll need to settle into a rainy day. The shots of the mountains paired with Fraulein Maria’s crooning blows me away to this day.
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman is an emotional yet silly and self-aware novel set in Sweden.
Anything else? I love playing Nat King Cole’s jazz albums from start to finish or evermore by Taylor Swift.
Claire Perkins
Rainy Day Movie: Harry Potter all the way. All of them- no specific movie! And any animated Disney movie.
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): Greys Anatomy, Vampire Diaries, Friends. Harry Potter books too (hehe).
Anything else? Make matcha (whisk, sift, and everything), listen to Taylor Swift’s folklore and evermore albums, and set the scene: a fireplace, blanket, and popcorn.
Marlee Melbert
Rainy Day Movie: I recently decided that National Treasure with Nicholas Cage is my new comfort movie. Its nostalgia, historical charm and feel-good ending fit right into the coziness of any rainy day.
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): New Girl, the show about America’s eccentric sweetheart, Jess, is timeless. I’ll watch it over and over again for its endearing characters and humor that has me in stitches.
Anything else? As of late, I’ve put on the sweet sounds of John Mark Pantana’s album Love Secrets whenever I want to glean all I can from a homey moment.
Caitlin Rose
Rainy Day Movie: The Notebook! It is a classic and I cannot help but watch it when it’s a little gloomy out.
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): I would have to say Gossip Girl. I love putting it on in the background when I clean my room or online shop.
Anything else? Instead of watching movies or TV shows, I can often be found listening to podcasts. My favorite at the moment is Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain!
Ruthann Daniel
Rainy Day Movie: The movie Chocolat with Johnny Depp is delightful and set in a quaint French town.
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): Bad Sisters (AppleTV+) is a hilarious yet emotional comedy thriller set in beautiful Irish landscapes, and it’s perfectly bingeable when there’s a storm outside. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that Little Women is a timeless rainy day book.
Anything else? I always make Scottish shortbread when it’s dreary outside; it’s essential.
Annabeth Freuh
Rainy Day Movie: The movie Leap Year starring Amy Adams is my go to comfort movie! Whether I am intently watching from my bed or using it as background noise while I do chores, it's a classic, feel-good film for me!
Rainy Day TV Show (or Book): Right now, I am reading The Silent Patient. There is nothing better than opening up a mysterious book when it’s gloomy outside.
Anything else? I often find that when it’s rainy outside and I am forced to stay in, I gravitate towards self-care. Usually, I will make myself a big cup or coffee and pull out my notebook to do some journaling.
