How has your style evolved throughout college?
This question actually makes me laugh a bit because I was voted “best dressed” in high school, and now I cringe at a lot of the things I wore. I have mainly just become more confident in my taste, and a good example of that is my Dr. Martens. I bought these in high school and was so afraid to wear them, so I hardly did. Now, every time I wear them to campus someone has complimented them, even a few of my professors, and it has made my day every time.
Favorite place to shop in Waco?
I don’t know if this counts, but garage sales and thrift stores. I genuinely only buy clothes from these places locally. I love finding really unique and quality pieces for a steal. It can be hit or miss, especially when I’m looking for specific items, but I think it’s so fun and rewarding as well.
How would you describe your style/go-to outfit?
I have no idea what my style is, other than second-hand. I’d say it’s pretty relaxed and eclectic. Some days I’ll wear a loose-fitting daisy jumpsuit from the early 2000s and other days it’s Dr. Martens, black high-waisted jeans and a black sweater.
Style icon?
I guess that would be my mom. She was always so dressed up, even though I would sometimes make fun of her for “being out of style.” Now I just have to laugh because so much of what she wore has come back into style and I even wear some of the pieces that I used to make fun of. She worked at Joske’s in Dallas in the early ’80s (similar to Dillard’s) and so she had such an amazing sense of high end fashion, I would give anything to own just one outfit from those photographs.
Trend you wish would come back?
I’m so happy with the trends that have come back so far, especially because as long as you dress to your aesthetic really well, anything is in style. But I think people our age are really trying to relive our childhoods with this ’90s throwback, and I love it. I don’t know if it’s working, but I love it. This may not count, but I would love for slow fashion and responsibly sourced clothes to become a trend. Fast fashion and even high-end fashion are actually really dirty industries, and I love that our generation is becoming so focused on thrifting and maintaining classic pieces for longer!
One thing you would never leave the home without?
In an ideal world, that would be my dog, Fennec. I think he’s the ultimate fashion accessory. But realistically, other than my phone, I almost never leave without a light jean jacket. I have over twenty of them, all different colors and patterns, and they are such a great capsule piece that also helps me survive Baylor’s below-freezing classrooms.
