Fashion month was forced to look different this year due to the ongoing pandemic, but designers embraced the changes and came up with new and exciting ways to keep the show going. We’ve seen fashion shows adapt to these changes by enforcing social distancing regulations as well as converting to a digital platform. The anticipation for fashion month this year was a mixture of excitement and curiosity to see how each designer would pull their shows off. During Milan Fashion Week, we saw an entirely new idea come to life provided by the haute couture brand Moschino: a puppet show.

Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott embraced the unfortunate situation as an opportunity for innovation. This entire show was scaled down with all models and guests being replaced by puppets. Not only were the models marionettes; Moschino included puppet spectators that represented real figures, Anna Wintour being one of them. All 40 of Scott’s life-sized designs were minimized to suit a 30-inch puppet model. That is not only innovation-- that is dedication.

Scott made a point whilst downsizing the pieces to maintain their individuality and perfection. Each outfit was handmade and embellished to the nines in order to create a life-like effect. Even spectators were professionally dressed as Scott made an effort to dress each in a fashion-forward yet representational manner.

When interviewed by CNN, Scott referred to the impact of the pandemic on the world when he said, "As the world seems to be splitting along the seams, the bare inner workings of something new will be exposed.”

When speaking with Vogue via video chat, he explained his intentions behind holding the fashion show in this way. Scott says, “The best thing I could do for everyone who is stressed about the election, the pandemic, social unrest, and the future was to give the gift of fantasy and take us away from all of it for a few minutes; let us enjoy this little fashion world of ours.”

Overall, the critiques on this show have been very limited. Scott’s dedication to couture and Moschino is admirable. He maintained his vision while adapting to the unprecedented changes that were brought about by the pandemic.
