How 4 Buttoned Staff Styled A Wardrobe Staple

We’re debunking the idea that button-downs are reserved for meetings and interviews. There are few wardrobe staples more classic and versatile than a white button-down. If you’re looking for fresh ways to style this timeless piece, the Buttoned staff has rounded up some unique options for you to try.

1. Crop top knot

If you’re searching for a new crop top to wear with your high-waisted jeans, look no further than Kirsten Alibee’s look inspired by Jennifer Lopez in the movie The Second Act. “The way she styled a men’s white shirt has stuck with me since I saw that movie and I won’t style one any other way,” said Alibee. To create a similar look, grab a white button-down that is true to size, button the middle two buttons and tie the two sides of the shirt in a knot at your waist. Layer with a bralette and style to your liking.

2. Oversized

Tatum Hanson opted for a more relaxed look. “My oversized button-down is one of my most worn items,” said Hanson, “it’s the perfect solution for days when I want to look put together with minimal effort.”  Roll the sleeves and throw this roomy top over your favorite pair of jeans, then pair with a hat or statement shoe to complete the look. She also suggested leaving the bottom unbuttoned and tucking one side into your jeans to add a bit of structure.

3. One shoulder

Carissa Setiawan proves that white button-downs are anything but boring. “My edgy sense of fashion told me that a one shoulder look will definitely break off the seriousness of a white dress shirt,” commented Setiawan, who switched up this classic style by opting for a shirtdress and sliding off one of the sleeves. “To me, this festival wear-meets-business inspired look is a reminder to not take life too seriously and that it's possible to have some fun in any situation.”

Add boots and layer a tank or bralette underneath for the full look.

4. Unbuttoned and tucked

One shirt, many silhouettes; Lauren Neumann struts a unique take on tucked-in tops. “When I see a men’s dress shirt, the first thing that comes to my mind is Tom Cruise in that one iconic scene. I just took it a different direction by adding a bold pair of pants and keeping the look comfy by pairing it with a sports bra,” said Neumann of her inspiration gleaned from Risky Business. To try out this styling: Keep your white button-down fully unbuttoned and layer over a fitted top. Tuck each side into high-waisted pants separately. Opt for printed pants to add extra visual interest. Shrug the collar off your shoulder and grab your favorite heeled sandals.
